If you’re in the NYC area and looking for something affordable to do with, or without the kids, I recommend the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport. Last week was spring break for most kids in NYC. My husband and I normally take the kids away, but this year, thanks to covid, we decided, (when I say we, I mean I), that hopping on a plane with them was not an option. Not only because I’m not ready, but also because my 2 year old won’t keep a mask on at all times and to be in an airport and on a plane with her mask-less is out of the question for me. Anyway, besides that, I don’t have much time available at work to take off, but I knew we had to do something. I took Tuesday off and we had an overnight staycation at the TWA Hotel.
My kids love cars and airplanes, so I figured this would be perfect for them. The hotel is actually located at terminal 5 of the airport. As we pulled up to the hotel and the kids realized where we were, they were so excited. The rooms come with either a view of the runway or a view of the hotel. Obviously, I opted for a room with a view of the runway.
Check in was quick and easy, (you can actually check yourself in), and there is valet service. Once we got to the room and the kids saw the view, they were on cloud 9, (best parents award goes to us). Seeing them happy is the best feeling ever! Although I was hoping to be able to see the planes takeoff and land, we were only able to see the planes coming in for a landing and heading to the runway for takeoff. It was still really a cool thing to see.
Not only are there awesome views, there are museum exhibits that includes vintage furniture, a display of TWA uniforms, posters, authentic artifacts and more. There are multiple options for food, a gift shop, a cocktail lounge, and a heated rooftop pool bar on the observation deck that overlooks the runway.
The only negative for me is that the pool is outdoors. Although it’s heated, I’d rather wait until the weather is nicer to take the kids there. Overall, it was a really cool experience for the kids and we’ll be going back once the weather is nicer. What did you do for spring break? Comment below and let me know.
